About the A&A Masterclass
An online educational program in astronomy and astrophysics for students and lifelong learners worldwide.
What we set out to do
Astronomy is the science most people fall in love with first, and the one schools teach least. A student who wants to go beyond the planets and the phases of the Moon soon finds that popular books stop where the physics starts.
The Astronomy & Astrophysics Masterclass starts there. It is a structured program of 16 units that starts with the tools every astronomer needs and ends with the open questions of cosmology. It keeps the mathematics, because the mathematics is where the understanding comes from, and it explains every step.
How the program is built
Every unit was written for this program as a self-contained chapter. Important equations, derivations, worked examples and historical excursions are set apart in boxes, so that you can read a unit at the depth you want. A research spotlight in each unit presents the published work of a leading astrophysicist, and a reading list points to papers that are free to read.
The weekly rhythm, the quizzes and the final exam are there for one reason: people learn more when someone expects something of them. The standard program takes 12 weeks. You can take longer, and you can go faster.
Who is behind it
The masterclass is run from Germany by a team that organises international academic programs and competitions for school and university students.
